Shrill, melancholic, sometimes provocative and sometimes sad, but always honest: these are the pictures by Hans-Jürgen Burkard in his exhibition “On days like these”, which will take place on March 13, 2024 in Schleswig nos.PHOTOMENTA, the photo art gallery of the Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse, was opened.

Photography meets German pop music

Hans-Jürgen Burkard (DGPh) is one of the great reportage photographers of today. His works have won several awards, for example the “World Press Photo Award” and the “Picture of the Year Award”. Burkard gained international fame when he moved from GEO to STERN in 1989 and was one of the first accredited Western photographers to report on the upheaval in the former Soviet Union. Burkard's reports from this time gave previously unseen insights into the taboo areas of this country.

After returning from his long stay in Russia, Hans-Jürgen Burkard worked on his current work: the illustrated book “On Days Like These” and the associated traveling exhibition. He drove through Germany with a thick stack of lyrics from German pop songs, looking for special motifs.

Hans-Jürgen Burkard has translated “On days like these” by “Toten Hosen” and 100 other songs into large images: free, strange, happy, enigmatic – but always impressive. The result is a picture of Germany that has never been photographed before.

“On days like these” in the “Guggenheim of the North”

After stops in several other federal states, the exhibition is now being shown in Schleswig-Holstein for the first time. With its 80 large-format works, the show can be seen in the “Guggenheim of the North” until June 14, 2024, as the laudator Peter-Matthias Gaede described the nos.FOTOMENTA in Schleswig during his opening speech, alluding to architectural similarities with the legendary museum in New York referred to.
