Turning point. Fishermen on Schlei and Lake Schwerin
A cultural bridge between West and East, between Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – that is the exhibition cooperation “Zeitenwende. Fishermen on the Schlei and Lake Schwerin” by Volker Janke and Holger Rüdel. On July 3, 2022, the photo show in the Schwerin-Mueß open-air folklore museum was hosted by Schwerin's mayor, Dr. Rico Badenschier opens.
Fishing in danger – on Schlei and Schweriner See
The two photographers met at a regional conference of the German Photographic Society. From the joint discussions about the Photo report “Turning of times” Holger Rüdel came up with the idea of supplementing his view of the critical situation of fishing on the Schlei with a parallel documentation of the fishing trade on Lake Schwerin from the perspective of Volker Janke. The fishermen on both the Schlei and Lake Schwerin face the same challenges. Their existence is more at risk than ever. Is fishing a craft that will soon only be admired in museums?
In the black and white image series by Volker Janke, exhibition curator and photographer Schwerin-Mueß open-air museum, the focus is on the fisherman Andreas Kühl and the master smoker Uli Marchewsky. Both work at the Mueß fishing farm, which is located right next to the museum at the southern end of Lake Schwerin.
The exhibition “Turning of Times. Fishermen on Schlei and Lake Schwerin” could be seen in Schwerin until July 2, 2023.
