The fishermen from Holm

This photo essay documents a turning point in history: the work of five fishermen from Holm in Schleswig on the Schlei – the last of what was once over a hundred. The photographs show work processes, tools, fishing boats, and seasonal conditions. They offer an authentic glimpse into a regional craft whose existence is threatened.

The exhibition cooperation “Turning point. Fishermen on the Schlei and Lake Schwerin” by Volker Janke and Holger Rüdel was opened on July 3, 2022 in the Schwerin-Mueß Open Air Museum of Folklore.

On July 8, 2021, Schleswig-Holstein's Environment and Fisheries Minister Jan Philipp Albrecht visited the fishing settlement of Holm in Schleswig on the Schlei.
“Turning point. The fishermen from Holm in Schleswig on the Schlei” with photographs by Holger Rüdel started as a double exhibition on July 1, 2021 in Schleswig.
The focus of the exhibition “Zeitenwende” – colour version – are portraits in XXL format of the five active fishermen from Holm in Schleswig on the Schlei.
I was able to test the new medium format camera GFX 100S for Fujifilm and the magazine “FineArtPrinter”. The setting was the fishing village of Holm in Schleswig.
