David Doubilet – Visual Dreams and Intense Curiosity

David Doubilet (USA) is the world-renowned creator of magnificent underwater photos. Like no other, he shaped our view of the oceans with their different landscapes and forms of life with his spectacular images full of poetry, grace and sometimes drama. His reporting trips and expeditions took him to all parts of the world, from the cold, dark polar seas to the dream areas of the Caribbean. In addition to numerous illustrated books and books, he published almost seventy articles for National Geographic and illustrated several cover stories. His book “Water Light Time”, published in 2006, became a milestone in underwater photography – a hymn to the sea.
I have long pursued the idea of showing the work of Nikon photographer David Doubilet as part of a world-first retrospective in Germany. I am delighted that this project can now be realized in 2014 in close cooperation with Rainer Danne, the director of the Iserlohn Municipal Gallery ("David Doubilet - Visual Dreams and Intense Curiosity", February 2 to April 27 in the Iserlohn Municipal Gallery, May 16 to October 26, 2014 in the Schleswig Municipal Museum; subject to change).
Following the extremely successful collaborations on the retrospectives of Steve McCurry and Jim Brandenburg, the two photography-oriented exhibition houses are exclusively presenting another world-class artist, David Doubilet.
My thanks go to David Doubilet for sharing our enthusiasm for this great project and for providing us with his most important photographs for the exhibition. A small selection of the 100 motifs can be seen here as a preview (all photos © David Doubilet / Undersea Images, Inc.).
Partners of the exhibition in Schleswig include Ostseefjord Schlei GmbH and Foto-Guth in Kappeln an der Schlei.
