Nomads of our time. Visiting the Stone Age House in Dithmarschen

Bokel has gained national fame as a “village full of circus wagons” that are used as homes and has already been the focus of a documentary film. In this picture, Käthe Kimmel and her herd are walking through the main street of the town, which is well worth seeing.

Schleswig, Kiel and Rendsburg were the previous stops. The exhibition has been open since February 16, 2024 “Nomads of our time. Migrant sheep farms in Schleswig-Holstein” im Stone Age house to see.

This recently opened museum complements that Dithmarschen Stone Age Park a permanent, ultra-modern presentation area for original finds from over 100.000 years of human history and a room for special shows in which the images from the report “Nomads of Our Time” are on display until June 16, 2024.

“With its expressive and visually stunning photographs, this exhibition is a celebration of art and also a homage to one of the oldest and most fascinating ways of life in our history,” emphasized Anne Benett-Sturies, State Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Areas, Europe and Consumer Protection for the State of Schleswig -Holstein, in her opening speech.

“The pictures show a real, realistic and not an artificially romanticized picture of our transhumance,” she summarized.

As coordinator of the exhibition tour, Dr. Bernd Brandes-Druba, Managing Director of the Sparkassenstiftung Schleswig-Holstein, in his speech the history of the “Nomad” project and its predecessor “Zeitenwende”:

Who would have recently thought about the fate of dying professions in Schleswig-Holstein? To the last Holm fishermen on the Schlei, to the last “nomads” with their migratory sheep farms in the north? Holger Rüdel brought this very close to us in his two large long-term photographic projects “The Turning Point” and “Nomads of Our Time”. We hope to see more of his illuminating and fascinating black and white photographs.

The exhibition is open until June 16, 2024 from Tuesday to Sunday from 11.00 a.m. to 16.00 p.m. (or from Easter until 17.00 p.m.).
