Under the title “das LebensMittel”, the Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse will be exhibiting under the umbrella brand at the Nospa Finanzmarkt Schleswig from March 28th to September 13th, 2019 nos.fotomenta Food photographs by Peter Rathmann. Some of the work on display was made possible through cooperation with FEINHEIMISCH, a network of agricultural producers and manufacturers, chefs and restaurateurs.
Peter Rathmann in nos.fotomenta
As the idea generator and curator of the project, I am pleased that Peter Rathmann, one of Germany's best food photographers, is being honored in his home country of Schleswig-Holstein. With this exhibition, which includes 51 large-format prints, the Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse is building on its first, very successful nos.fotomenta presentation with the underwater photographer Robert Marc Lehmann
The press release for the exhibition “das LebensMittel” states:
Peter Rathmann, BFF photo designer, specializes in still life and food photography. Anyone who looks at Peter Rathmann's highly professional works quickly senses that this is not just an outstanding photographer at work, but a real artist and esthete. Peter Rathmann has a special eye for quiet arrangements; his photos appear quiet, calm and down to earth. His sophisticated play with light and shadow and his special ability to give food beauty and aesthetics even in the final stage of its metamorphosis encourage us to (again) look at food more consciously and appreciatively and perhaps rethink our own handling of food . Without food there is no life - food as a means of life.
Professionals observed in the photo studio Part 1: Peter Rathmann and Gunnar Hesse
I recently visited Peter Rathmann in his studio in Ascheffel on the edge of the Hütten Mountains and followed with my camera as he showcased FEINHEIMISCH products in collaboration with well-known chefs exclusively for his exhibition “das LebensMittel”.
Gunnar Hesse from the “Seeblick” hotel restaurant in Amrum was the first to announce himself. His specialty is wild oysters from the Wadden Sea, some of which he collects himself. Ebb and flow determine the “harvest times” of these hand-picked delicacies. They are larger than the farmed products and taste “nuttier, sealier,” as Gunnar Hesse emphasizes.
The staging of a collection of wild oysters was also very purist and authentic - an image solution that Peter Rathmann and Gunnar Hesse developed together: the seafood was arranged centrally in a simple tin vessel on a rustic wooden base, flanked only by a lemon Knife and some (artificial) ice.
As we all know, less is often more...
Professionals observed in the photo studio Part 2: Peter Rathmann, Oliver Firla and Jan-Ole Didwischus
The shooting continued on a later day in Peter Rathmann's studio with creations from the FEINHEIMISCH kitchen at the historic ODINS inn in Haddeby. At ODINS Haddeby, Oliver Firla and his team combine regional quality products and classic craftsmanship to create modern, fresh cuisine. The company places particular value on its suppliers. One of them is the Backensholzer Hof from North Frisia with its well-known raw milk cheese dairy.
This is how the idea came about to integrate this producer, who also belongs to the FEINHEIMISCH group, with its exquisite types of cheese into the planning. In teamwork, the image idea of a still life with fresh ODINS bread and cheese enjoyment from the Backensholzer Hof was developed and photographed in several variations - just as skilfully reduced to the essentials as with the wild oyster arrangement before.
After the topic of “bread, cheese and games” was covered, Oliver Firla and his chef Jan-Ole Didwischus suggested focusing on a special specialty of their house: Viking flintbrød. These are hand-kneaded flat cakes made from rye and wheat flour, topped with local ingredients from the region on herbed Skyr and baked in the wood-burning oven according to old traditions.
The day of shooting in Ascheffel ended with this food photo production. Just watching the making-of through the camera's viewfinder whetted my appetite: visually for the entire exhibition in the Nord-Ostsee Sparkasse and culinary appetite for the photographed specialties...
